What remains
What Remains starts from a question that is inevitable for every human being: what happens after death? It is an existential life question to which everyone has their own answer. Faith, cultural background, and personality all play an important role in this and together shape how someone gives meaning to this subject.
Although I am not religious myself, I notice that I often think about larger existential questions. The idea that there must be “something” after life personally gives me a sense of calm, because it helps give meaning to the unknown.
In the game, different religious and mythological perspectives are explored through various puzzles. This includes ancient Egypt, with its rituals surrounding death and the afterlife, and Greek mythology, in which souls after death are sent as shades to the underworld.
The choice for an escape room comes from the idea that everyone is, in a certain way, “trapped” within their own beliefs, norms, and values. By allowing the player to experience different perspectives, I aim to create space to look beyond one’s own framework of thought. The goal is not to give one correct answer, but to let multiple ways of thinking exist alongside each other.
With this work, I do not aim to present a single truth, but rather to show that there are many different answers to the same fundamental question. Everyone who plays What Remains will interpret the game in their own way, depending on their background, beliefs, and experiences. In that sense, the game is not only an exploration of religion and mythology, but also a mirror for the player themself.
